Actor Meryl Streep received an honorary Ph.D. from Indiana University yesterday.
During the ceremony’s introductions at the IU auditorium in Bloomington, IU Bloomington Provost Lauren Robel praised Streep for her work regarding the arts and women’s advancement.
IU President Michael McRobbie also commended Streep and her husband Donald Gummer on their continuous support to IU and the state.
“It’s a big thrill for me,” Streep said after receiving the awards which makes her a Doctor of Humane Letters.
Streep’s visit was part of the Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Lecture Series. Following the ceremony she participated in a discussion with IU film studies professor Barbara Klinger.
Streep’s husband, who is a sculpture, is an Indiana native and many pieces of his work are featured around the state, including at the IU Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses.
